The Foundation Skills Course is a three and a half day residential course aimed at providing a thorough grounding in the areas that make up Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM).
The course is aimed at providing a thorough grounding in the areas that make up Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). The course is intended for delegates wishing to discover the breadth of subjects covered by ‘Sport and Exercise Medicine’. It would be suitable for those considering developing or extending an early interest in SEM, those involved in Sports Injury Management, but without the wider knowledge of SEM and those simply wishing to increase their general knowledge in this area of medicine.

Who is the Course for?
The course is open to any Doctor. It is also open to Allied Medical Professionals and Medical Students, provided they have background knowledge at a level suitable to benefit from this course. This will depend on the individuals CV.

Course Content and Programme
The course will cover aspects of both sports medicine and science; in health, disease and following acute and chronic injury.

Anatomy, pathologies and practical examinations of the foot, ankle, knee, shoulder and spine
Exercise physiology
Nutrition and Fluid Balance in Sport
Sport and Doping
Practical Rehab.

The 2020 BASEM Foundation Course prices are as follows:

Member – Residential – £695
Member – Non Residential – £645

Non Member – Residential – £795
Non Member – Non Residential – £745.

Member rates are available to BASEM and ACPSEM members only.

When is the next Foundation Skills scheduled for?
The next BASEM Foundation Skills course will take place from Sunday 7th to Wednesday 10th June 2020. The course is 3.5 days and will start on a Sunday lunchtime and run through to a Wednesday afternoon.

Where is the next Foundation Skills course to be held?
The venue for the 2020 BASEM Foundation Skills Course is Lilleshall National Sports Centrre, Shropshire. The course is residential with a non residential option.

Dr Jane Dunbar, Sports Medicine Specialist
Jane has taught on BASEM courses since about 1995 and also lectures at Stirling and Nottingham University. Jane qualified in Medicine from St Andrews and Manchester Universities. Mixing GP training with expeditions and sailing before joining a GP practice in 1989. in Stirling area, Scotland. At this time she also started working in medical cover at Golf Tournaments locally at Gleneagles (Bells Open) and in sports medicine at the local Rugby Club. Dr Chris Tomlinson
Chris is currently Senior Sports Physician at the English Institute of Sport, where he has worked for the past 6 years, and Chief Medical Officer to British Gymnastics and Archery GB. He has worked in Professional Football since 2002 and currently works at Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. He has an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine and a PGCert in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.

Dr Alethea Beck BSc, MBChB, MRCGP, MScSEM, MFSEM
Dr Alethea Beck is a sports physician working with the ministry of defence as the lead doctor for the Regional Rehabilitation Unit for Scotland. This role focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and further rehabilitation of injured military personnel back to full fitness.

She is well known within the field of elite sport and has vast experience in travelling with teams. For 5 years she worked with the Scottish Rugby Union and travelled to New Zealand with the Men’s under 20’s squad in 2014 for t
Christopher Curtis BSc (Hons), PGDip, MSc
Christopher is a Lecturer in Nutrition at St Mary’s University, Twickenham lecturing on both the undergraduate & postgraduate nutrition programmes. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Newcastle University before completing both his Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Nutrition through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Masters in Sport & Exercise Science from Sheffield Hallam University and is a member of the Sport & Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).
